Dhiraagu, the national communications provider and largest service operator of the Republic of Maldives, has signed a contract on 13th February 2007 with Deutsche Telekom's International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS).

Deutsche Telekom (DT) has been awarded one of Dhiraagu's first international links via submarine cable. The circuit is being routed via the Maldives-Sri Lanka cable and then connected to DT's Singapore PoP.

Dhiraagu CEO, Mr Ismail Waheed stated that "We are delighted to enhance on our business relationship with a leading company such as Deutsche Telekom and this agreement would further extend the international gateway for Dhiraagu network, providing better quality of service to our customers”.

"With this IP transit service; Dhiraagu will be able to provide higher bandwidth access to the Internet and noticeable improvement in access speed compared to its traditional connection via satellite services. Dhiraagu can now free up satellite bandwidth for critical services," states Calvin Lee, Vice President, Asia Pacific and Middle East, DT ICSS.

"This deal reflects the ability of ICSS to provide global reach via our international network. Dhiraagu will benefit from DT's state-of-the-art technology and ICSS's reliable service without having to build or maintain its own networks which results in cost-savings which will ultimately be passed on to Internet users in the Maldives. Globally ICSS provides carriers' carrier products and solutions (Voice, Bandwidth and IP) to almost 900 licensed network operators (fixed, mobile and ISPs) and international carriers in more than 190 countries."
