Dhiraagu To Lay An International Optical Fibre
Dhiraagu announced today that a Board decision had been reached to commence with the work to develop an international submarine cable for the Maldives.

The final approval for the project is expected to be forthcoming in the Board Meeting to be held very shortly and it is projected that the cable will be completed in 12 - 18 months.

All international telecommunications in and out of the Maldives is currently carried over satellite and the introduction of a submarine cable will provide a better quality and unlimited capacity between Maldives and other international destinations.

Dhiraagu said that it's Board had issued instructions late last year to investigate the feasibility of an international submarine cable for the Maldives. This work had been carried out and it has been decided that the Company will now engage in the final stages of the design and tendering before implementation of the cable.

Dhiraagu CEO Mr. Ismail Waheed said, “This is a major milestone in the history of Dhiraagu. The cable when completed will bring tremendous benefits to our customers and the Maldives, and we will be able to bring the rest of the world to our doorsteps along with the highest quality services and at affordable prices.

We reached this decision after evaluating an alternate offer to join a consortium that provides connectivity between India and Maldives, which did not meet with the required technical, operational and commercial expectations.”
