Dhiraagu Lays First Inter-Atoll Submarine Cable In The Maldives
Dhiraagu submarine cable network (DSCN) project successfully completed the cable landing at Gaafu Dhaal Atoll. The submarine cable landed into Gadhdhoo on Friday, 24th Nov 2006 at 1200 hrs.

It is a major milestone in the telecommunication history of Maldives as this is the first domestic inter-atoll submarine cable laid between the atolls connecting two islands in Laamu Atoll and Gaafu Dhaal Atoll. The domestic link between these two atolls was established by a 237 km fiber optic submarine cable.

Currently this link is being served through a satellite connection. DSCN project commenced laying the cable from Sri Lanka and reached Maldives on 14th Nov 2006 where it was connected to the landing station at Hulhumale. Additional domestic links were established between Hulhumale and Male', Male' and Kaafu Villingili and finally the cable connecting the two atolls. The links established between Laamu Gan and Gaafu Dhaal Gadhoo is the final phase of DSCN project's marine work.

DSCN project was contracted to NEC Corporation of Japan on 01st May 2006. The next phase of this USD 27 million project would be the testing of the links and ensuring that the network is ready for providing quality service to customers.

It is anticipated that Dhiraagu will be ready to provide service using its submarine cable network by early February 2007. Dhiraagu's main purpose of deploying the fiber optic submarine cable network is to offer quality service to customers at an affordable price.
