Dhiraagu is proud to announce the extension of Dhiraagu Wireless Zone service to 15 atoll capitals on 1st February 2007, enabling broadband internet access to all the atolls.

To mark the inauguration of this milestone event, a ceremony was held at the Nasandhura Palace Hotel. Dhiraagu CEO, Mr Ismail Waheed highlighted this is one of the very important steps Dhiraagu is taking to provide easy broadband access to the Atolls, and although this is only the start of the project, we will ensure that we will continue with these initiatives until the whole of Maldives is covered with Broadband access.

The Chief Guest for the event was Mr Mohamed Amir, Chief Executive of Telecommunications Authority of Maldives (TAM).

Dhiraagu Wireless Zone service is a prepaid service that allows customers to access the Internet at their own convenience, anytime at any Dhiraagu Wireless Zones (Hotspots). To use Dhiraagu Wireless Zone, you will be required to obtain an instant account with Dhiraagu, either with a scratch card, available from the service desk of any of Dhiraagu Wireless Zones or else via sms from any Dhiraagu Mobile.

Anyone with an IEEE 802.11 b/g WiFi enabled device may use the Dhiraagu Wireless Zone service. There are currently 11 active Dhiraagu Wireless Zones in Male’. TAM authorized Dhiraagu to use 2.4G ISM band for provision of broadband Internet service on 1st August 2006. This latest development extends the same service to all atoll capitals in the country.

Dhiraagu has introduced ADSL Broadband service to Gnaviyani, Gaafu Dhaalu, Baa, Seenu and Haa Dhaalu atolls prior to this. The 15 atoll capitals to which Wireless Zones have been newly introduced are as follow: Ha. Dhidhoo, Sh. Funadhoo, N. Manadhoo, R. Ungoofaaru, Lh. Naifaru, K. Thulusdhoo, A.A. Rasdhoo, A.DH. Dhangethi, V. Felidhoo, M. Muli, F. Nilandhoo, D. Kudahuvadhoo, Th. Veymandoo, L. Fonadhoo and Ga. Villingili

The extension of these services is the beginning of a larger roll-out project with future plans to further extend service to the islands with a population above 1,500 by August 2007. The project plans also include enhancing the coverage of the 15 atolls and extension of these services to other islands as well.
