    Dhiraagu announces the event date for Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race 2015 and opens applications for NGOs
    Dhiraagu has announced the date Friday, 12 June 2015 as the official date for Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race 2015 and dedicated the event to the theme “Help Protect Children”

    Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race is the biggest annual run held in the country and since its inception in 2007, it is the ninth consecutive year of the event. Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race is the only international run held in the Maldives which is officially registered in AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) and it provides opportunities for Maldivian and International athletes to participate together in the run. The date scheduled for this year has also been officially calendared in AIMS.

    Applications for NGO participation are now open till 10 March 2015. Every year, the annual race is dedicated to a social cause and this year’s cause is to help protect children. The race acts as a significant platform for NGOs working in the area of child protection to create awareness and raise funds for the social cause.

    NGOs are requested to send in an application before 10 March 2015 to register for Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race. All NGOs meeting the eligibility criteria in the application will be endorsed as a registered NGO for the event and featured on Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race website. Detailed application guidelines for NGOs have also been published on the website dmrr.mv.

    At the time of registration, runners will have the opportunity to nominate an NGO from the list of endorsed NGOs .Dhiraagu will contribute a total of MVR 100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Rufiyaa), to the top five NGOs nominated by participants (MVR 20,000 to each NGO).This grant is awarded to help NGOs kick-start their planned activities.

    Additionally, the opportunity to purchase race T-shirts will be opened to runners where all proceeds from the sales will be donated to the nominated NGOs.

    Moreover, runners will have the opportunity to donate funds directly to the NGOs by means of getting sponsors for their race attires.

    At the day of the event, registered NGOs can utilize the stalls which will be provided to conduct awareness sessions and engage with the public.

    Entries for runners (race registrations) will be opened to the public soon and will be announced at a later date.

    Dhiraagu’s support for Child Protection.

    Child Protection and support is an important focus area in Dhiraagu’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

    • Dhiraagu recently collaborated with the NGO, Advocating for the Rights of Children (ARC) to launch Surf Smart, an year-long programme to raise awareness on online child safety.
    • In 2013, Dhiraagu conducted workshops for parents across the country to raise awareness against child abuse covering topics on how to recognize signs, important tips on what to do and how to report abuse etc.
    • Dhiraagu also supports the national Child Helpline to provide assistance to children in need of protection to remain accessible via the toll free number 1412. Calls can be made anonymously to the Child Helpline from anywhere in the country for free of charges.
    • Dhiraagu continues to support, Kuda Kudhinge Hiyaa orphanage by sponsoring teachers and by providing free internet to the centre with parental control service since 2008. In 2013, Dhiraagu established two computer labs along with a new library set-up for the children at the orphanage
