Dhiraagu in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced to implement two key projects under the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action.
The two key projects are “Drones for
Resilience” and “Film for Change Climate Edition”
The Drones for
Resilience will be centered on incorporating the use of drones as an
effort to “Scale up the National Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management in Maldives”. Utilizing
drone technology, detailed maps would be produced under this project for 4
islands based on disaster risk assessment, providing the means for more
informed disaster preparedness and disaster risk management. These maps could
also be utilized by local planners and national planners for land use planning,
understanding high risk areas and safe zones within the islands. The project
aims to support the Government of Maldives to enact and operationalize the
Disaster Risk Management (DRM) legislation, strengthen early warning operating
procedures, increase public awareness and knowledge on disaster risk reduction
and climate change adaptation and build community capacity for disaster
preparedness. The project will also support the National Disaster Management
Authority (NDMA) to function as a knowledge hub for integrated disaster
information and coordination.
Film for Change Climate Edition is a project to empower young people to explore and form narratives on issues of climate change in Maldives through the medium of film. The “Film for Change” initiative was initially piloted in 2017, and based on its success is now moving into its third year with this renewed partnership. This programme will provide young people with the necessary technical and creative skills on producing documentary-style short films using mobile phones and tablets. While the main focus is on building advocacy and awareness of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 (Climate Action), the participants will also be educated on how to link other selected SDGs to issues arising from Climate Change. The films will be officially launched at a film festival later this year following which the films will be made available on social media and other public platforms.
Environmental Sustainability is a key
focus area under Dhiraagu’s CSR programme and the company is proud of its
involvement in both projects, which use digital technology and creativity to
build capacities for resilience and development. The projects complement Dhiraagu’s
vision to use digital solutions as a means for youth empowerment and social
development.
The programme falls under UNDP’s Resilience and
Climate Change Unit, which has a focus on sustainable management of the
environment, increased climate resilience through climate change adaption and
mitigation. UNDP has been in the Maldives for over
40 years and is committed to working with people at all levels of society to
help build a nation that can withstand crisis, drive and sustain the kind of
growth that improves quality of life for everyone. The organisation achieves
this by offering global perspectives and local insights to empower lives and
build resilient nations.
Dhiraagu and UNDP Maldives have had a
successful history of collaborating together, with the launch of key
initiatives such as the Startup Weekend Maldives (2017), Youth Leadership
Programme (2018) and Film for Change 2017 & 2018, all with a key focus on
youth empowerment.
