Dhiraagu is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Sri Lanka Telecom for the implementation of an optical fibre submarine cable between Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The MoU was signed on behalf of Dhiraagu by the CEO Ismail Waheed and on behalf of Sri Lanka Telecom by the CEO Mr. Suhei Anan. Speaking at the signing ceremony Mr. Anan said, 'We already have existing submarine cable links connecting Sri Lanka to all the major countries of the world.

When this cable is completed Dhiraagu can conveniently connect to the rest of the world via Sri Lanka'. Mr. Ismail Waheed also spoke at the ceremony. 'We are initiating the first tangible steps in one of the most ambitious and exciting projects in recent years', he said.

'Obviously those who will benefit most from this would be our customers as we would be able to offer an even better quality of service and almost unlimited bandwidth to cater for state-of-the art innovative services including broadband, multimedia and other bandwidth hungry applications'.

Dhiraagu is already in the process of appointing an international consultant for the project. Following this, a marine survey will be carried out to study the various aspects of the project including environmental impact and the possible cable routes before the actual commencement of the laying of the cable. The project is currently expected to be completed around September 2006.

Dhiraagu's decision to lay its own submarine cable to Sri Lanka was reached after evaluating an alternate offer to join a consortium that provides connectivity between India and Maldives, which did not meet with the required technical, operational and commercial expectations.
