2021 - 2025

2024

  • Inauguration of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system landing in the Maldives.
  • Received ‘Maldives’ Broadband Telecom Company of the Year’ at the Asian Telecom Awards 2024.

2023

  • Awarded the 'Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network' by Ookla for three consecutive years.
  • Completed the upgrade of our Domestic Submarine Cable System of Maldives (DSCoM), adding four additional segments to our existing submarine cable.
  • Provided 5G service to 50% of the population.
  • Opening of a Tier III certification-ready centre in Dhiraagu Head Office
  • Establishment of a brand-new Security Operations Centre (SOC) and upgrade of existing Network Operations Centre (NOC).
  • Launched a photobook to mark the 35th anniversary ‘Leading the Digital Transformation Journey of the Maldives.
  • Introduction of Half Marathon category to Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race.

2022

  • Awarded the 'Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network' by Ookla for Q1-Q4 2022.
  • Initiated the Domestic Submarine Cable system expansion project.
  • Signed an agreement with the Government of Maldives and Beyon to strengthen cyber security in the Maldives.
  • Introduced Unlimited Home Internet packages.
  • Received ISO/IEC 27001:2013 Information Security Management System certification.
  • Reached 100 islands on Dhiraagu Fibre Broadband (FTTH) network.
  • Signed an agreement to connect Maldives to the global super high-way SEA-ME-WE 6 Submarine cable system, providing direct access to key Internet Exchange Points and Data Centres across South Asia and Europe.

2021

  • Awarded the 'Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network' by Ookla for Q3-Q4 2021.
  • Completed 85% coverage on Dhiraagu Fibre Broadband (FTTH) network.
2020-2016

2020

  • Establishment of the Maldives-Sri Lanka Cable (MSC) to strengthen the digital eco-system of Maldives.
  • Completed 80% coverage on Dhiraagu Fibre Broadband (FTTH) network.
  • Dhiraagu together with Arcils, a local game developer launched the first local multiplayer online game in the Maldives.

2019

  • DhiraaguTV introduced Video on Demand (VOD) for the first time in Maldives.
  • Launched commercial 5G for the first time in the Maldives and South Asia. 
  • DhiraaguTV introduced pay-per-view content for the first in the Maldives.
  • Completed 75% coverage on FTTH network.
  • Deployed Hotspot services at several public areas across Male’.

2018

  • Completed nationwide 4G network expansion.
  • FTTH service was extended to additional islands, covering 74% of the households across the nation.
  • Expanded Dhiraagu TV network, reaching 72% of the households by the end of the year.
  • Launched Dhiraagu TV mobile app, offering customers the opportunity to watch TV on the move.
  • Launched digital cards for Elite club members.
  • Provided connectivity to over 200 schools across the country as part of the ‘digital schools’ initiative by the government.
  • Marked 30th anniversary with a grand celebration, offering a range of promotion giveaways and treats.
  • Demonstrated the first ever 5G services in Maldives.

2017

  • Introduced the new Dhiraagu brand with new logo, orange as primary colour and new tagline ‘Take on Tomorrow’ on 24 May 2017 initially to staff and then to public on 25 May 2017.
  • Launched Dhiraagu TV service on 25 April 2017 with free JoyBox, connection and one-year subscription for the initial 100 customers.
  • Launched Dhiraagu Pay on 8 Oct 2017 with nearly 100 merchants nationwide.
  • Introduced the first international music streaming app on 15 April 2017 in collaboration with Yonder Inc.
  • Introduced Mamen on 7 Oct 2017. Mamen is a digital mobile app for prepaid customers giving freedom and flexibility to build their own plan.

2016

  • On 10 Feb 2016 introduced customer support via LiveChat for 24/7.
  • Launched 4G LTE in Ha.Dhidhdhoo on 19 Mar 2016.
  • 4G LTE expanded to Lh.Hinnavaru, N.Velidhoo, Raa.Dhivaafaru, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Laamu Gan Thundi and Mathimaradhoo with increased 4G coverage to 58% of Maldives population.
  • Achieved 500,000th customer on Dhiraagu network.
  • Fibre network launch in Kaafu Maafushi, Villimale and three wards of Laamu Gan.
  • Marked the 10th consecutive year of Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race
2015-2011

2015

  • Launched DhiraaguTV service (play.mv) for mobile and fixed broadband on 25th Jan 2015.
  • Launched Fibre broadband service to Male’ and Hulhumale on 31st March 2015 with speeds up to 100Mbps.
  • Launched LTE-Advanced service in Male’ city on 10th Sep 2015, which is also the first LTE-A (4G+) service in South Asia.
  • Announced the completion of nationwide 3G mobile broadband rollout to cover all inhabited islands.
  • Relocated Dhiraagu Customer Service Centre to DHQ and started providing services.
  • Established a dedicated lounge at DHQ to server Elite Customers.

2014

  • Introduction of 4G LTE services on 9th Nov 2014.

2013

  • With the sale of CWC’s majority of assets in its Monaco & Islands business unit, Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) becomes majority shareholder of Dhiraagu from 3rd April 2013.
  • Launched HSPA+ (H+) providing faster data speeds on Dhiraagu mobile network.
  • LTE trial launched with 4G Experience Kiosks placed in selected location of Male’.
  • Marked 25 years of dedicated services to the Maldives.

2012

  • Implemented national submarine cable network across the country.
  • Moved to DHQ building Ameenee Magu in March.
  • Implemented Online Services with bill view, bill payment, account management and online applications.
  • Dhiraagu majority shareholder CWC announces the sale of majority of the assets of its Monaco & Islands business unit, which includes Dhiraagu.

2011

  • Dhiraagu launched the first phase of its high-speed network rollout programme. The Company signed a contract with NEC Corporation for the deployment of a domestic submarine cable network across the Maldives to provide access to high speed internet services to Atolls.
  • Dhiraagu went on to become a public limited company in September with an IPO in October 2011 and was later listed on the Maldives Stock Exchange in January 2012.
2010-2006

2009

  • Dhiraagu started rolling out its 3G voice and data network.
  • Introduced partner-shop model with the opening of the first partnershop in Male' for bill payment.
  • Introduced Dhiraagu Apprenticeship Programme (DAP).

2008

  • Provided 100% mobile coverage to all inhabited islands, resorts and major industrial islands.

2007

  • Implementation of a Domestic submarine cable across the one-and-half degree channel.

2006

  • Implementation of a Fibre optic submarine cable link between Sri Lanka and the Maldives jointly with Sri Lanka Telecom on 12th December.
2005-2001

2005

  • Mobile competition was introduced with commencement of operations on 1 August 2005 (Wataniya Telecom Maldives)
  • Rebranded and introduced the new logo and red as primary colour.

2003

  • Introduction of internet competition with commencement of its internet services in December 2003 (Focus Infocom Pvt Ltd - Raajje Online)

2002

  • Introduction of Broadband ADSL Internet service in August 2002.

2001

  • Prepaid system installation was completed and mobile prepaid service was launched on 15 September 2001.
  • SMS service was launched on 20 May 2001.
2000-1988

2000

  • Introduced DhiMobile International Roaming service on 8th May 2000.
  • Implemented 24x7 Call Centre - 123 on 10th November 2000.

1999

  • Introduction of GSM mobile service.
  • GSM mobile service was initially made available to AMPS customers on 24 Oct 1999 and commercially made available for all from 21 Nov 1999

1997

  • Introduction of analogue mobile service

1996

  • Introduction of internet services.

1995 – 1999

  • Installation of Satellite Earth Station and a telephone exchange in Seenu Atoll to provide telecommunications between the atolls in the far south to the rest of the country.

1991

  • Introduction of Paging Service

1988 – 1995

  • National trunk network trials conducted from Male to Laamu and Lhaviyani - with payphones as the main means of providing connectivity.

1988

  • On 16th May 1988 Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun Private Limited was incorporated and registered in the Maldives.
  • A joint venture company 55% owned by the Government of the Maldives and 45% by Cable and Wireless.
  • Dhiraagu began operations on 1st October 1988.
